James Lee Kelly, III (Lee) 77, passed from this world on August 13, 2023.
Lee was born on August 3, 1946 in Shreveport, LA to Alice Knight Kelly of Carthage, Texas and James Lee Kelly Jr. of Waco, Texas. After graduating from Carthage High School in 1964, he earned a degree in Journalism from Lamar University. He then served in the Texas National Guard before beginning work as a journalist and business editor for several Texas newspapers including but not limited to, the Temple Daily Telegram, the Longview News-Journal, and the Panola Post. Lee loved stories and lived a life of inquiry; reading, writing, and learning as much as he could about the many topics of interest to him. He was an eclectic person known for his unique perspective and sense of humor. His tenderness was known to those he loved deeply.
Lee leaves behind two daughters, Aidan Larson (Kelly) and Kate Kelly-Marshall and four grandchildren, Sofia, Rowan, Georgia, and Leo. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Archibald and Beatrice Knight, his mother Alice Knight Kelly and father James Lee Kelly Jr., his uncle Richard Knight, and beloved family friend Leta Fae Arnold.
He will be missed, but we hope he has found peace and freedom from the struggles of a mortal life. Lee will be memorialized in private ceremony. We appreciate your condolences.
